Practical help for choosing, using and managing browser extensions.
Getting started
Understand extension permissions
Extensions may ask to read or change information on websites, access tabs, or use browser features. Before installing, compare the requested access with the tool's purpose. A simple utility that asks for broad access deserves closer inspection.
Read the permission prompt carefully. Where the browser supports site access controls, limit access to the sites where the extension is needed. Revisit those settings when your needs change.
Permissions describe potential access, not proof of misuse or safety. Check the publisher's privacy policy and official documentation before making a decision.
Open the official extension store. Confirm the developer and product name.
Read the current description, permissions and privacy information.
Check recent reviews for recurring issues, while remembering that reviews alone do not establish safety.
Inspect update history and developer support information.
Understand whether paid features, trials or subscriptions are involved.
Do not treat a store presence, rating or directory listing as a guarantee. If important information is missing, postpone installation until you can verify it.
Everyday maintenance
Keep your extensions under control
Open your browser's extension manager regularly. Disable tools you no longer use and remove those you do not recognise. Fewer active extensions make it easier to understand your setup and troubleshoot problems.
If browsing becomes slow or a page stops working, temporarily disable extensions and re-enable them one at a time. Change one thing at a time so you can identify the cause.
Menu names vary between browser versions. Refer to the browser's current official support documentation for exact steps.
